FOUR THINGS TO ASK A STRANGER (almost a parody)

Welcome to Mary Anne Radmacher's blog.

One way to get to know a person you've just met is to ask them to tell you about their favorite friends. It's said that a person essentially becomes an aggregate of the five people with whom they spend the most time.

There's another telling question to ask a stranger. It's all about a book.

1) Is there one book that you have re-read and will read again (and again)?
2) What is the most recent book that you've read and what stands out to you most?
3) What is the title of a book you recommend most often to friends?
4) What was the last book you read that made you so sad when it came to the end? (Because you wanted to keep on reading, not because the ending was sad!).

If the person you are just getting to know has never re-read a book, can't remember what stood out from the last book they read, doesn't recommend books to friends and has never felt sad to stop reading an excellent book...

I suggest that you stop conversing with them. And, perhaps, run. Kidding (not kidding). Perhaps you might consider striking up a conversation with someone else that you might want to get to know. AND start THAT conversation off by recommending a book you've recently read...

On The Wings of Possibility

In the quiet of this day may you know the greatness of your spirit and may your hopes fly on the wings of possibility.

(from maryanneradmacher.com poster # 01101)

Decades ago I wrote out the longings of my life. On that list was have seventeen books published. Hear that? Decades ago…and today I’ll share a photo in place of the essay. This photograph was sent by a friend who was visiting the country’s largest book store (I know, you New York folks claim the same about The Strand bookstore, but still…)Powell’s in Portland and was excited to find several of my many books. I’m on my way to seventeen…

"HOW'S THE WEATHER?"

“In all things and in all ways, choice impacts virtually every element of our life. It bears repeating that even those things which seem out of reach of our choice are governed by how we choose to perceive them.” Page 147 from SIMPLY AN INSPIRED LIFE

The drug store clerk scowled at me as I handed her cash for my purchase. My look must have inquired, “What?” because she defended, dramatically, “It’s just that it’s practically the last day of July and I can’t believe that I have to wear a sweater. It’s so cold!” I remain silent. Apparently my face was still asking, “What?” as she continued.

“I mean, Summer. What kind of a summer IS this? It’s flippin’ foggy outside. Geez.” I had given her exact change. I was ready to leave but she held my look. She wanted answers and apparently I looked as if I knew something about sweaters and summer.

No. I knew that I saw it was cold and I was wearing a sweater myself. In that instant I thought of my human-rights-advocate friend, Gina, and all the observations she has made about the cheerful countenance and attitude of the many people she greets in refuge camps in Africa. Sweater or not, those folks are just grateful to be alive in the context of what they face in their days. So I told her all I know about summer, She would have been happier with commiseration, but instead I say, “All I know is this: It IS cold and I HAVE a sweater to wear. And on some days that enough to be grateful for.”

So it seems the month of July feels no obligation to meet anyone’s expectations for a certain temperature. As I drove away today I thought about all the things I have in my day today that I could rail against. But I decided to take action on things that I can actually impact…and, the weather is not one of them. But I can impact by choosing which sweater to wear!

Seek The Heroic In Yourself

"Modeling my qualities on heroic beings is a life-long practice.

Recognize the heroic in others and bring it in to your own daily experience."

p. 66, SIMPLY AN INSPIRED LIFE

It is too easy to look at someone I admire and say, "I could never be like them." And, really, why would I want to? I'm doing well being like myself. Bringing certain QUALITIES that admire in them in to my own experience is what I want. I may not have a daily newspaper column as Eleanor Roosevelt did...but, like her, I can choose my words carefully and communicate with the goal to motivate and provoke thought. Just like Eleanor. What heroic quality can you draw into your life today? And from whom?

QUESTIONS CAN CONFUSE YOUR PROCESS...

“It is easy to allow questions to confuse your process – if you believe all questions must have answers. In the process of choice and perception, asking questions for their own sake becomes a clarifying tool.” P. 131 SIMPLY AN INSPIRED LIFE coauthored by mary anne radmacher/Jonathan Lockwood Huie

Asking questions is a great tool. Questions become contrasts and ways to weigh and measure. Consider. Observe. I do not allow the questions to distract me from my quest – and become involved in trying to find answers to them all. Questions do their best work when they lead to me perspective, not specific answers. And in that, I find inspiration in this, from George Carlin, “Don’t sweat the petty things and don’t pet the sweaty things.” With laughter this reminds me to stay with my focus in the day and avoid the distraction of petting the sweaty things.

What Will You BEGIN Today?

‎"The journey to an Inspired Life requires
different things from each of us.
Common to us all is the
COURAGE to simply begin."
p. 7 SIMPLY AN INSPIRED LIFE.
mary anne radmacher/Jonathan Lockwood Huie, coauthors.

Simply to begin...does not mean that you expect to finish in one fell swoop.
No. It is as it says...the courage to Just Start. What is that thing that you
have been meaning to do, longing to do? You have not yet begun because
for what reason? You do not know if it will "work," how it will turn out,
you don't have all the elements you imagine you will need in perfect place.
Or another reason, not identified here and completely unique to you.

Simply begin. Have the COURAGE today to take one step toward that
big thing. And then the beginning will be over and you'll be in the lane,
swimming toward whatever the finish might look like at the other end
of the pool.

Jump in. Really. The water's fine.

JOY IS A CHOICE

Who is in charge of your state of being? In the midst of the flurry – clarity. In the midst of the storm – calm. In the many roads – a clear choice. From page 127 of SIMPLY AN INSPIRED LIFE coauthored: mary anne radmacher and Jonathan Lockwood Huie

Any one silently looking over the shoulder of me this particular day would wonder why I wasn’t in a puddle of tears. In fact, one of my best friends asked me why I wasn’t. My answer?

“I can walk with both legs. And most of my body parts work pretty good. My heart is full of love. I have some of the best friends on the planet. I get to create things that inspire me every day.”

And that’s just the start of a really long list of blessings. Challenges come to my days, with or without an invitation. I am not defined by those challenges. In fact, in most instances they make me more determined. Determined to think more live clearly, live more healthfully and come to a deeper cadence between where I am and all I long to accomplish. If you are challenged in this day…I wish for you…your own finest strength. And joy in the choices that you get to make today. Said another way, JOY that today you GET to make choices. – mary anne radmacher -

HONOR YOURSELF

On Page 55, leading the chapter on HONOR in this instructive book, SIMPLY AN INSPIRED LIFE, coauthored with Jonathan Lockwood Huie, I remind myself to...

“Honor yourself with lovingly courageous actions chosen intentionally.”

Indeed. It’s Friday. Friday of a full week of diverse activities. If if was given to sports metaphors, I’d say this feels a lot like one of my first lessons in basketball. As long as one foot stays in place I can pivot around and view the court all i want. But as soon as I choose to move that grounded foot, I’ve declared my intention to move, dribble or shoot. If I recall the rules correctly, if I stay there TOO LONG, I can be called for “holding.”

Okay, Friday! I’ve pivoted and looked at the court (of course, the demands and choices in my day). And now -- it’s just you and me. I’m moving and i am getting ready for a basket shot. Swish. Nothin’ but net. And so it will go throughout the day. I’m choOsing my actions, with love, with as much courage as I can call in the day and it is all wrapped in my intention.

PROMISES TO MYSELF #15

PROMISES TO MYSELF • Promise #15 • SEE WORDS • December 21, 2009 • I promise to look with clear sight at what I create. • “mary anne, be a servant to your craft today.” • TODAY – no clocks, no timers, no editing. Every idea will be welcomed. All things considered…

“Remember the difference between looking and seeing.” m.a. radmacher

“The greatest thing a human soul ever does in this world is to see something and tell what it saw in a plain way. Hundreds of people can talk for one who can think, but thousands can think for one who can see. To see clearly is poetry, prophecy and religion all in one.” - John Ruskin -

Reflection at the end of yesterday…wearied from the second day of production craft at an art festival in a barn. I entered the day with an phrase assigned by one of my new phraseologists, Caren Albers. This is what I wrote before sleep,

amid the chaos, love calls my name.

love calls my name and I’ve learned well enough to answer right back. quickly and with ready identifiers, “I am here.”

chaos swirled readily all day from the stranger with food challenges with whom I split my carefully measured for the day food, to the painfully shy ten year old boy whom I engaged in creative chatter. chaos followed me as I worked toward completing the donations I’ll be sending to a hospital for Christmas remembrances for those who are hospitalized on Christmas and new year’s eve. after break down chaos chased me all the way home.

wearied. blurry eyed. protein deprived and peopled out, that extra long trailer hitch of my wagon pitched itself self with some degree of speed into david’s front bumper. while he was unloaded bins of stuff, he was not hurt in anyway. however, his bumper was. cracked. it’s amazing how far a license plate can stretch without breaking. who knew? amid that chaos, as i sat in the driver’s seat, recovering from the dreadful sounds of plastic shredding and metal pulling, i heard love call my name. the voice of love sounded just like my husband! the words love formed were, “it’s just a car, sweetheart. come inside and let me take care of you.” i’ve learned well enough to answer right back, “thank you. i’m so glad i’m here.”

Stand out elements from conversation with Steve Maraboli

The STAND OUTS from my conversation with Steve Maraboli today, October 8, 2009 LIVE WITH INTENTION

download the interview at empoweredlivingradio.com or search Steve Maraboli at iTunes

I love my conversations with Steve Maraboli. His enthusiasm is contagious. His commitment to service and to good thinking is inspiring. He’s funny, smart and a great conversationalist. A full hour flies by and it feels as if we have been talking for about ten minutes.

The involvement of synchronicity in the development of our monthly series: the day we were scheduled to talk to each other one to one, Steve encountered my poetry on a poster in a hospital he was at with his mom. The words LIVE WITH INTENTION meant a lot to Steve at that moment and when he realized my name was at the end of it – it struck him as particularly significant.

Things that Steve said in the course of our conversation that I wrote down:

“I’m most honest when I’m scared or in trouble. I wrote things in my notebook when I was in the military being deployed somewhere – I was a genius at those times.”

“Falling asleep is when I most out of my own way.”

“Every day I’m going to do WHAT I can WHILE I can.”

“Each day I wake up and there’s a gift at the end of my bed – waiting to be opened. Each day is a gift. I exhaust myself with the blessings of the day. Many people play with an older box - A box from a different day. I go into tomorrow with no rules -(from the past) just a brand new box.”

“You’re not pulled by anything – you’re driven by your mission, your intentions.”

“A lot of times the truth isn’t dressed for our occasion.”

During our break Steve played a clip from a public speech. In it he talked about how intentions are part of the formula but they are not everything. Intention has to partner with action. And then he challenged people to, “Unass their couch.” And, he assured his listeners that, “Unass” is a real word, by the way!”

Ww explored how our habits, our history, our past…can control our present. Jonathan wrote in and asked how I dealt with difficult days. Days when things are not “quite right.” My coauthor, another Jonathan (Lockwood Huie) in Simply An Inspired Life calls those things that show up in our days, our shadows. People tend to try and disregard the shadows and only pay attention to the positive. The Light. But even the brightest light casts a shadow! I suggested that one must stand up, turn around and face that history. Instead of trying to drown out its impact, allow its voice to speak to you. Ask, “What are you here for and what do you have to teach me?” It occurred to me that another “Marabolism” could apply here…”UNASS YOUR PAST.” Indeed, stop sitting on your past. Rise up. Face it and allow the lesson to occur to you so that you can release it and move on. People can sit with their past on the ride into today. Don’t you love it, Steve? “Unass Your Past.” When it’s a book, I’ll want to read it.

There are patterns that both Steve and I use to focus ourselves in our days. He conducts a “funeral” for each of his days before he sleeps. I write in a dated log my lessons, connections, frustrations I’m letting go and celebrations I want to embrace.

In the morning I have several processes: an intellectual pursuit, spiritual exploration and writing processes. Now I’m using:

THE INTELLECTUAL DEVOTIONAL – AMERICAN HISTORY ((KIDDER/OPPENHEIM);

365 EXCUSE ME (MINA PARKER)

CREATING A CHARMED LIFE (VICTORIA MORAN)

I write in a book dedicated to this process either a general vision/intention for my life or a gratitude I want to express.

I review my written intentions and my personal mission statement that I post in the front of my journal. I write in my journal or on a slip of paper the significances I want to address in the day.

What I forgot to mention on the radio is that I play a word puzzle. It’s the last thing I do before I get out of bed in the morning. It gets my mind in the space of problem solving and strategic thinking. A good mindset readying myself for whatever might come my way in the day.

Mike wrote in validating that the practical steps we provide listeners when we talk are really helpful and that led to this suggestion… CONNECT to you own intentions by recording peak moments, “aha” experiences or things that really motivate and energize you. Write those things down, individually, as they occur on small pieces of paper. Collect those papers. Follow this practice for several weeks and you can review the things you’ve written and begin to identify a pattern of the things which may form the basis of your life mission/intention.

Spiros wrote and asked how I keep my artistic soul alive in my everyday activities. I use my craft to create supportive and personal connections, both for myself and to others. I decorate the journal I use in artful ways that are meaningful and inspiring to me. I create cards as gifts for friends and people I want to acknowledge or thank. I adopt a deployed soldier through Soldiersangels.org and write and send things to support him and to share with our military personnel.

DID YOU LISTEN TO THE INTERVIEW? I WOULD ENJOY LEARNING WHAT STOOD OUT FOR YOU?
